The Trotter Family were immigrants from Scotland. According to a printed memoir of one of the name, they are desended from the Earl of Goury, whose name is promindent in Scottish history ( see Robertson’s History of Scotland, Vol. II, 1882 ) in the time of James VI. Being opposed to the King and Catholicism they left their homes and took refuge in the mountains of Molerne in Ireland, where says the author of the memoirs, their desentants to this day are among the respectable gentry of the country.

My grandparents came to Virginia not less a century ago, 1742, a young married couple and settled near Philadelphia. Subsequently they moved Augusta County, Virginia, prior to the Revolutionary War, for my father’s eldest brother was at the siege of York. I should judge from the lands that my grandfather and his sons possess, he was a man of wealth.

They were among good farms of Augusta County. The brothers would probably have done better to have remained upon them, but that Eldrodado of the west, Kentucky. Provided a scene too tempting for enterprising men to resist, and they followed the tide of mirgration, caring with them my aged grandparents, whose ones reprose in Bourdon County, 9 miles east of Paris, at residence, then of my uncle Joseph, who subsequently moved with his family to Langman, settlement in Illinois. Grandfather died about 1807 at the age of 90; grandmother died four years later, about 1811, age 96, with pulmonary disease. Grandfather was a pious, exemplary man. Grandmothers family was from Londonderry, Ireland. My uncle James was probably their second son. My uncle Joseph died at the age of 90, with pulmonary disease. Your grandfather

Col. James stood once a candidate for the general assembly of Virginia. He was an officer in an expeditation from that county to Tyrgart’s valley; was esteamed an enterprising man. ( See acct. of Gen. Harrart’s expedition, 1790, in the Western Review, 1820, in which Col. Trotter is mentioned) I met one of his men in this country, who spoke of Col. Trotter asexcellent and humane officer…. ( His wife was named Margaret )

My Uncle James was a merchant and owned much land in Ohio and Kentucky at one time.( Uncle James had two sons, Samuel and George. ) Merchants in Lexington. Uncle J. died at his farm, the“ Woodlands”, July13, 1827. Aunt Margaret was of the Dowings Family of Augusta, County –among the first settlers of the county, lived 3 miles from New Providence church. Major John Wilson married a sisterof an Aunt Margaret, son of Samuel Wilson and myself married sisters. Col. James Trotter lived in Fayette Co. His home was the “Woodlands”,  now grounds of the Chautauqua Assenbly of Kentucky. His will was written July 13, 1827 and probated Augusta County, 1827. His legatees were George Richards Trotter, Cary Ann Trotter, and Margaret Trotter ( children of the deceased son, James Gabriel Trotter ) George Trotter Jr. the three daughters of his Samuel ( infants ). Cordelia, Georgitta, and Sarah; son William Leary Trotter, brother George and wife Sarah. Excuters-------Richard Higgins, Richard Haws, Jr. and William T. Barry.
